For 25 years he played lead trumpet in the Basie band. He also was the road manager. He was a dependable class act all the way. He was 81 when he passed in 2006. I was 16 y/o when I first saw the band. Sonny seeing that I was the youngster of the audience came and said hello during a break. As a young trumpeter myself I was in 7th heaven at his gracious act.
